The Gossamer Gear Silverback 65 is a roomier version of the most popular model Gossamer Gear Mariposa. Overall, the backpack sticks to the tried-and-true features that have worked great on other models for years, but the Silverback features several modifications that make it the ideal companion for truly long and demanding trips. On the other hand, with its low weight of 1066 grams, it can also serve as a highly comfortable backpack for short weekend trips.

Back Panel Construction

Unlike the Mariposa or Gorilla, the back of the backpack does not use an aluminum rod, but a lightweight polycarbonate stiffener that transfers the weight to the hip belt. This stiffener can be easily removed, so avid hikers can carry the backpack without it. On the outside of the backpack’s back panel is the classic mesh pocket with a foam pad, which can also be easily removed and used as a seat. This pad is perforated for maximum ventilation, but of course you can also replace it with a more breathable version Airflow Sitlight Pad.

Durable and lightweight material

The body of the backpack is made from proven 100D Robic nylon, which Gossamer Gear has custom-made. The most heavily stressed areas, such as the bottom, side pockets, and hip belt, are made from 200D Robic nylon. Despite its low weight, this material is very durable, but it is not waterproof! For protection against rain, we recommend placing all gear inside the backpack into waterproof bags or a single large pack liner.

Roll-top closure

The backpack is packed using a standard roll-top closure, which we’re used to seeing on most ultralight backpacks. Just fill the main compartment as needed, roll it up, and fasten it. There are two options for securing the collar. Either using two detachable side straps or using the main buckles directly on the collar. Another strap is then pulled over the "lid" of the backpack, which allows you to better shape the backpack or attach additional gear using the strap.

Unmatched comfort

Gossamer Gear backpacks have won the hearts of countless hikers, primarily thanks to their unmatched comfort and ingenious simplicity. This is largely due to the very wide and well-padded shoulder straps, which are simply unrivaled. And then, of course, there’s the top-notch hip belt with huge zippered pockets. Even when fully loaded, the backpack remains incredibly comfortable. This is also aided by balance straps, side compression straps, and, last but not least, the height-adjustable chest strap.

Inflatable pockets

As is customary with most Gossamer Gear backpacks, this one also features truly spacious external pockets. The slanted side pockets can easily accommodate even a larger water bottle. The main front pocket is the best feature of the entire backpack. But be aware, unlike other Gossamer Gear backpacks, this one does not use mesh—which often tears in rougher terrain—but rather classic rugged nylon. Thanks to this, you don’t have to worry about tearing the pocket. We should also mention the hydration bladder compatibility. An internal pocket in the back of the backpack is designed for this purpose. There are also loops for trekking poles or an ice axe. The backpack comes standard with a size M hip belt.
