For 2020, Rab has made its lightest high gaiters even lighter. Yet they haven’t lost any of their original design—sturdy, durable material around the ankle plus a lighter, breathable section around the calves. The latter is made of waterproof 70D two-layer ripstop nylon with a DWR finish, while the ankle is protected by thicker 200D nylon.

The absence of a zipper on the front contributed significantly to the weight reduction. On the 2020 model, Velcro is all that’s needed to open the entire front length of the gaiter. Compared to the older version, the 2020 version has fewer seams and stitching, though the basic details remain the same as before. The elastic heel that wraps around the shoe, and the hook on the front tip for attaching to the laces. However, the hook now points outward, so there is no risk of damaging the shoe’s surface.

The design of the strap under the shoe has undergone major changes. The strap adjustment is located inside the gaiter, and its length is adjusted using Velcro. With the previous version, if the strap was tightened very tightly, it was necessary to cut off the excess rubber strap or deal with loose rubber flapping around the shoe. This is no longer an issue with the current design, so we consider it a significant improvement. In addition, the material of the strap itself has been reinforced; it is now made of flexible and durable thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU).

Finally, the upper part of the gaiter features an elastic drawstring, designed, of course, for one-handed operation. Despite their lightness, these gaiters are a reliable and durable companion wherever protection from rocks, mud, water, or snow is needed. They’ll be ideal for any summer or winter hikes, or even cross-country skiing off-trail. They’ll certainly handle a glacier or two during high-altitude hiking.
