The battery is based on lithium-ion technology. Li-ion technology offers one of the best ratios of stored energy to cell weight. The batteries have no memory effect, and self-discharge is minimal. This battery is suitable for the popular Fenix HM51R headlamp.

The RCR123A battery is the same size as a disposable CR123A lithium battery, which is why it is often used in flashlights as a rechargeable alternative to these disposable cells. It can be charged directly in the headlamp, or in a standard charger.

Compared to the ARB-L16-700U battery, it is designed for a higher discharge current (up to 2.5 A). It is therefore particularly suitable for devices with higher current draw. Li-ion technology offers one of the best ratios of stored energy to cell weight. 

Battery protection can be divided into two areas. The first involves added electronic circuits that prevent overcharging of the cell (a situation where there is a risk of explosion with conventional Li-ion batteries) or, conversely, excessive discharge (which would render the battery unchargeable). In addition, these circuits protect the battery against short circuits or high current draw, which could damage the battery. If the battery’s electronics detect that limit values have been reached, they disconnect the cell. The second area involves protection against overheating (PTC thermal protection) and a special anti-explosion valve.

Unlike other valves used in Li-ion batteries, this one, in the event that the gas pressure in the cell exceeds a certain limit, separates the electrodes inside the battery, thereby effectively interrupting the exothermic reaction and venting the excess gas pressure out of the battery. Thanks to the combination of electronic and mechanical (temperature and pressure) protection, Fenix batteries are among the safest Li-ion batteries available.
