The legendary American brand Six Moon Designs has once again taken its lightweight tarps to the next level. The Owyhee is based on the time-tested and popular Haven tarp.

Insect protection

The main features remain the same. It is still a single-wall construction that is set up using 2 trekking poles or 2 poles. The tarp easily accommodates two adults, including all their gear. A major advantage is the two side entrances, so everyone has their own entrance on their side. The most significant change compared to the Haven is that the Owyhee has a strip of mosquito netting sewn around the perimeter of the tarp, keeping mosquitoes and other similar pests at bay. You may have already encountered this same solution on the Deschutes Plus tarp, which is very popular among our entire Nalehko team.

Setting up the tarp is really quick and easy; all you need are 6 stakes (not included) and a little practice. After a while, you’ll get the hang of it, and then it’ll be a breeze.

Another new feature is that the package includes an original groundsheet, which is shaped like a "tub" with a rim about 10 cm high. So you don’t have to worry about water leaking onto the groundsheet. An undeniable advantage is that the groundsheet clips into the tarp at the corners, and it’s entirely up to you whether you use it or not.

The tarp itself, with its mesh, weighs a mere 690 grams and has a covered area of a fantastic 4.9 m². The groundsheet weighs 190 grams and measures 244 x 112 cm, which is more than enough for use with two sleeping pads.

Of course, both peaks feature two ventilation openings to minimize condensation inside the tarp. There are additional loops on both sides of the tarp for further tensioning and increasing the head and footroom. Thanks to the well-thought-out pyramid design and slightly offset peaks, there is enough space in the tarp for you to sit down comfortably without bumping your head against the walls of the tarp.

Seam sealing

Warning! The tent does not have sealed seams!!! As with other UL tents and tarps, you must do this yourself. For tarps made of siliconized nylon, you can purchase this adhesive or mix your own blend according to these instructions. 

It might be a hassle, but at least you’ll get to try setting up the tent and get familiar with it while taping it. If this is an insurmountable problem for you, then you aren’t ready for the ultralight concept and should look for your gear in a different category… Ultralight is about knowing your gear and its limits, and treating and caring for it accordingly. My reward is a feather-light backpack that makes it a joy to spend whole days roaming the mountains!
