The Inov-8 Trailfly G270 has undergone a number of changes. The most significant one concerns the cushioning layer. The cushioning is twice as thick as in the previous generation, and the cushioning material itself has also received a major update. The shoe’s foundation is the brand-new POWERFLOW MAX foam, offering unmatched softness and top-tier energy return. Overall comfort is also significantly enhanced by the new 6mm BOOMERANG insole, again made from high-energy TPU foam. The softness and comfort achieved in the TRAILFLY G 270 are incomparable to any “old-school” INOV-8 shoes.

But we wouldn’t be us if we sacrificed natural feel and excellent terrain feedback for the sake of comfort. The total cushioning depth, including the insole, is 18 millimeters. This value is high enough to allow you to run comfortably for an endless amount of time, yet low enough to ensure the entire shoe remains maximally flexible and reads the terrain perfectly. High proprioception is also supported by the zero drop, which, thanks to the overall softness of the cushioning, even beginner and recreational runners need not fear. The zero drop remains a defining feature of this model.

However, thanks to the redesigned cushioning, the new TRAILFLY G 270 is also more accessible to less experienced runners who do not have ideal forefoot running technique. Thanks to the thicker midsole, foot protection against impact while running on rocky trails has also been significantly improved. Despite the double cushioning, the TRAILFLY G 270 has gained only 10 grams. In addition to energy savings, this has a positive effect on high dynamics and flexibility, which is much higher compared to the original TU G 260. You’ll benefit from these features especially during tempo runs and races on mixed terrain. The flexible TPU cushioning ensures that you won’t want to run slowly in this shoe.

Better traction

The outsole has also undergone a slight redesign. The changes are subtle at first glance, but the resulting effect will take your breath away. The new tread pattern offers radically more reliable traction even on more technical trails and soft surfaces. There is still a strong emphasis on the shoe’s overall versatility, so the grip isn’t so aggressive that it limits you when running on roads and paved paths. Naturally, graphene is used for an unbeatable balance between traction and durability.

Wide last

The upper remains stretched over our widest last (5, standard fit), but is now made from more sophisticated materials with very high durability. Durability testing on prototypes took place over several long months, and even with intensive use in rocky terrain, we didn’t encounter the slightest problem. Forget about Kevlar, which is practically indestructible but didn’t suit everyone due to its stiffness and hardness. The TRAILFLY G 270 uses a combination of structured fabric covered with a durable rubber coating, and as a result, the upper fits the foot like a glove.

Crossing the Slovak Paradise and the Low Tatras

Vašek has already thoroughly tested this new addition during several longer runs and races, and most recently put them to the test during a 150 km Slovak Paradise and Low Tatras crossing. I have to say that this shoe immediately impressed me the first time I put it on. Extremely comfortable, great feel for the terrain, and a nearly imperceptible zero drop. For me, it’s one of the most versatile and comfortable shoes Inov-8 has made in recent years. I can easily imagine using them for a multi-week trip in the mountains, a brisk shorter trail race, or even a long ultra. Even though I have a relatively narrow foot, width 5 doesn’t restrict me at all, and my foot doesn’t feel loose in the shoe. The outsole is far better than the previous generation and provides excellent grip even on very technical descents. I was really surprised that I could trust the shoe 100% even on slippery ladders and logs in Slovak Paradise. Lately, this shoe has become my go-to choice for any mountain adventure.

Choosing the Right Size

When choosing running shoes, we recommend selecting a size at least one size larger than your usual shoe size. This will help you avoid blisters, pressure sores, and other discomforts. If you’re looking for shoes primarily for long-distance treks, a larger size is an absolute must—we often recommend choosing shoes up to a size and a half larger. Prolonged exertion in challenging terrain puts significant strain on your feet, causing them to swell quickly. What feels comfortable during a short training session or a weekend hike is often insufficient for a multi-day trek.

When choosing a larger size, however, it is absolutely essential that your heel stays secure in the shoe. If your heel "slides around," tightening the laces usually won’t solve the problem—in that case, we recommend choosing a different type or model of shoe. A properly fitting shoe is the foundation of comfort and the prevention of pressure points and blisters.
