For the 2021 season, Rab is introducing a hiking version of its best-selling and most popular model, the Rab Torque. While the classic Torque is essentially defined as a pair of climbing pants with a wider cut and reinforced abrasion panels, the Torque Mountain version has a narrower cut, lacks reinforced panels, and is intended more for general hiking.

The material remains the same as in the classic Torque version. It is Rab’s proprietary Matrix^TM stretch fabric, which boasts high breathability, excellent durability, lightness, and quick-drying capabilities. The same material is also used in the popular Borealis softshell jacket and the ultra-light Rab Talus running shorts. The fabric features a DWR finish, so the pants can withstand 15–20 minutes of light rain.  

The Torque Mountain pants offer all the features needed for everyday hiking. Pocket lovers will surely appreciate the four zippered pockets. Two on the sides, one on the back, and one on the right thigh. There are also zippers at the bottom of the legs, which allow you to widen the legs for use with taller hiking boots. The last zipper is at the waist, where it serves as a classic closure along with two metal studs. The waistband is half-elastic and features six belt loops for a tighter fit if needed.

As we mentioned at the beginning, the biggest difference with the Torque Mountains is in the cut. Compared to the classic Torque, they have a Slim Fit cut, making them much narrower and more form-fitting. This is most noticeable in the thigh and calf areas.

Thanks to the highly stretchy Matrix^TM fabric, however, the narrower cut is not a hindrance, and the pants do not restrict movement in any way. The pre-shaped knees also contribute to this. The absence of reinforced panels in the knee area and on the inner side of the calves also increases breathability, so you won’t sweat as much in these pants.

All these features make the Torque Mountain pants an ideal choice for classic hiking on day trips, weekend excursions, or even week-long treks where there is little risk of mechanical abrasion from rocks. Thanks to their slimmer fit and higher breathability, you can even jog comfortably in them, making them ideal for fastpacking trips in cooler temperatures, where you run part of the way and walk the rest, but don’t want to wear running tights.
