For over 10 years, we’ve been offering great Gossamer Gear backpacks with which we’ve completed most of  our long-distance treks.  And now we’re introducing the second generation of shelters and tents from this company, with The Free model being the hottest new release on the ultralight market.

The Gossamer Gear The Free is one of the lightest freestanding double-wall tents ever designed for ultralight travel. Thanks to its freestanding design with crossed poles, you can pitch it practically anywhere. The folks at Gossamer Gear market it as “no stakes required,” but based on our own experience—as with all UL freestanding tents—we strongly recommend that you always stake the tent.

Behind the design lies nearly 30 years of experience from Gossamer Gear in developing ultralight gear. The Free combines minimal weight, simple setup, and reliable protection from the elements. The ClearSkies™ flysheet provides reliable protection from rain and wind, while the double-wall construction ensures excellent ventilation and reduces condensation.

Setting up the tent is quick and intuitive thanks to high-quality DAC NFL aluminum poles with Eco Green anodizing, a central connector that stabilizes the pole intersections, and a simple clip-based attachment system. The result is a lightweight, spacious, and easy-to-use shelter for anyone who wants maximum freedom of movement without any unnecessary extra weight. Thanks to its compact dimensions, it’s also great for bikepacking and is therefore ideal for adventurers who combine both disciplines. 

ClearSkies™ Material

The new ClearSkies™ material represents a significant improvement over the previous generation of tents. It combines lightweight 15D recycled Robic Nylon with a 20D ripstop mesh, making it more tear-resistant and better suited for long-term use in demanding conditions. A silicone layer on the outside and a durable PU coating on the inside enhance water protection while helping to reduce the material’s water absorption. According to the manufacturer, the new fabric offers 35% higher tensile strength and more than double the water resistance compared to the previously used material. Recycled fibers and production without intentionally added PFAS substances are a given.
