The Gossamer Gear Twinn Tarp is yet another in a line of absolutely perfect products from this legendary American brand. For nearly 10 years, we’ve been offering excellent Gossamer Gear backpacks with which we’ve completed most of  our long-distance treks and now we’re expanding our selection to include this company’s excellent tarps. As soon as you unpack the tarp, you’ll immediately see that there’s nothing to fault here. It’s built from ClearSkies™, an extremely lightweight yet durable and sturdy material.

ClearSkies™ Material

The new ClearSkies™ material represents a significant improvement over the previous generation of 10D nylon-based materials. ClearSkies™ combines lightweight 15D recycled Robic Nylon with a 20D RipStop grid, making it more tear-resistant and better suited for long-term use in demanding conditions. A silicone layer on the outside and a durable PU coating on the inside enhance water protection while helping to reduce the material’s water absorption.

According to the manufacturer, the new fabric offers 35% higher tensile strength and more than twice the water resistance compared to the previously used material. 

Recycled fibers and production without intentionally added PFAS substances are a given.

Ready for Action

The tarp’s main seam is factory-taped, so you don’t have to worry about a thing and can head out into the field right away. The corners of the tarp, where tension is concentrated and stress is greatest, are carefully reinforced. The guy lines, including line-locks—which make setting up the tarp really quick and easy—are located at the four corners and also on both sides (2). Of course, these 6 guy points are reinforced.

If you want to set up the tarp as a classic A-frame, there are two reinforced loops with eyelets at both ends of the shelter for this purpose. These also feature reflective guy lines with line-locks. We definitely recommend using a pair of trekking poles for setup, as they allow you to better adjust the height at which you set up the tarp. Of course, you can also use collapsible poles or tie the tarp up using nearby trees.

We recommend a trekking pole length of approximately 115 cm at the front and approximately 82 cm at the foot end.

Above-average dimensions, low weight

Even though this is one of the lightest 2-person tarps on the market, it doesn’t skimp on size—quite the opposite! The ridge length is a fantastic 310 cm, while the wall length at the base is about 270 cm. At the front, the tarp has a great width of nearly 3 m, and at the foot end, just over 2 m. These dimensions provide more than enough space for two people, even with their gear. The total weight of the shelter, including the guy lines, is an unbelievable 335 grams (with the stuff sack—an extra 10 grams). Once packed, you’ll end up with a rather funny package measuring 23 x 9 cm, so you won’t even notice it’s in your backpack.
