The Gossamer Gear Solo Tarp is another in a line of absolutely perfect products from this legendary American brand. For nearly 10 years, we have been offering excellent Gossamer Gear backpacks with which we have completed most of long-distance treks, and now we’re expanding our selection to include this company’s excellent shelters. As soon as you unpack the shelter, you’ll immediately see that there’s nothing to fault here. The base is made of extremely lightweight yet durable and sturdy siliconized 10D nylon, which has a PU coating on the inside with a minimum water column of 1800 mm. The total weight of the tarp is an amazing 206 grams!

Straight into action

The tarp’s main seam is factory-taped, so you don’t have to worry about a thing and can head straight into action. The corners of the tarp, where the greatest stress occurs, are carefully reinforced, and most importantly, there are guy lines including line-locks, thanks to which the tarp can be set up really quickly and easily. Gossamer Gear didn’t forget to place these guy lines in the middle of the tarp as well.

If you want to set up the tarp as a classic A-frame, there are two reinforced loops with eyelets at both ends of the shelter. These also feature reflective guy lines with line-locks. We definitely recommend using two trekking poles for setup, which allow you to better adjust the height of the tarp, but of course, you can also use folding poles or tie the tarp above you using trees, for example. We recommend an optimal trekking pole length of approx. 110 cm at the front and approx. 80 cm at the foot end.

Extra-large dimensions, low weight

Even though this is one of the lightest tarps on the market, it doesn’t skimp on its dimensions. Quite the opposite. The ridge length is a fantastic 310 cm, and the wall length at the ground is 272 cm. At the front, the tarp has a great width of 213 cm and 152 cm at the foot end. These dimensions provide more than enough space for one person, even with luggage. The total weight of the shelter, including the guy lines, is an believable 206 grams (with the bag – an additional 6 grams). When packed, the tarp measures a mere 20 x 5 cm, so you won’t even notice it in your backpack. We can definitely recommend this tarp for multi-day treks in milder conditions.
