Washing, maintenance and storage

The fabrics used for down jackets are durable and strong. However, sometimes a few feathers can escape. This happens because a combination of fine down (90 %) and small feathers (10 %) is often used. These have sharp points, which sometimes pierce through the fabric.

A small amount of feather leakage through the fabric or seams is normal for any down product, especially when first used. Individual feathers are very fine and can therefore find their way out through small holes. If you see any feathers, whether down or regular, coming through the fabric, DO NOT try to pull them out.

Try to push it back into the jacket and gently rub the open area between your fingers. Pulling the feathers out could cause the hole to get bigger, which is not desirable. Rubbing the hole between your fingers will restore the structure of the individual fibers in the fabric and help to close it.

Normally, this amount of feathers is negligible compared to the total amount and the insulation properties remain the same. However, there may be other reasons why your jacket is losing feathers. If you feel that your jacket is defective, please contact us immediately.

No. For a product to be waterproof, it needs to contain a waterproof membrane (such as eVent, Gore-Tex, or Pertex Shield) and have taped seams on the inside. Waterproofing can also be achieved with a polyurethane coating.

Most of the down jackets we sell do not have any of the above-mentioned features for specific reasons. They are primarily designed for cold, dry weather (mainly in alpine environments), where the main problem is snow, which can be kept out with a water-resistant finish. If the jackets were waterproof, their weight and size when packed would increase significantly, and they would also restrict movement more. All these negative factors need to be reduced as much as possible in a high-altitude environment.

Any waterproofing agents that claim to "make your jacket waterproof" simply restore the water-repellent layer on the fabric and feathers. This layer limits the absorption of moisture and water into the fabric, but does not make it waterproof.

Simply put, they are not. Rab down jackets are primarily designed for hiking in alpine conditions, where a lightweight, packable jacket with wind and snow protection is needed. Adding a waterproof membrane would make the jackets too bulky and heavy for most alpine ascents.

For any greasy stains, we recommend first treating the affected area with pure soap or a special cleaning agent Nikwax Tech Wash or Nikwax Down Wash Direct. Then simply wash the clothes according to the washing instructions.

  • Before washing synthetic apperal, clothing or equipment, we recommend running one wash cycle on empty load without detergent or fabric softener. This will remove any powder residue and ensure that the washing machine is completely clean.
  • Ensure that all normal and Velcro fasteners are fastened (closed).
  • The equipment or clothes can be washed by hand or in a washing machine using enzyme-free liquid detergents, pure soap, or special preparations such as Nikwax Basewash or Teal Sport Function when the temperature is not higher than 30 °C (i.e. washed cold).
  • Avoid fabric softeners and washing powders containing enzymes that combat dirt. Do not have the equipment dry cleaned or ironed.
  • Unless otherwise stated in the washing instructions, we recommend drying the equipment in a tumble dryer at a lower temperature. This will better preserve the water-repellent surface treatment.

Each fabric has specific washing requirements. Please read the washing instructions included with each product carefully.

  • Before washing merino clothing, we recommend running one washing cycle without detergent or fabric softener. This will remove any detergent residue and ensure that the washing machine is completely clean.
  • Ensure that all normal and Velcro fasteners/zippers are closed.
  • The merino clothing can be washed by hand or in a washing machine using enzyme-free liquid detergents, pure soap, or special detergents such as Nikwax Wool Wash or Teal Sport Merino with the temperature not going over 30 °C (ideally wash cold on a gentle cycle).
  • Avoid fabric softeners and washing powders containing enzymes that combat dirt. Enzymes can break down the individual organic fibers of merino wool. Do not have the equipment professionally dry-cleaned or ironed.
  • Unless otherwise specified in the washing instructions, we do not recommend drying the merino in a tumble dryer even at a lower temperature. Ideally, merino clothing should simply be hung up and left to dry naturally outdoors in the sun and air. If outside conditions do not allow this, just let it dry at home freely hanging for some time.

Surface water-repellent treatment renewal

Waterproof and softshell clothing has a water-repellent layer on the outer fabric: DWR – Durable Water Repellent, which serves as the first barrier against external moisture penetration. However, this surface layer weakens over time and therefore needs to be renewed. Although the waterproof membrane will continue to prevent water from penetrating, its effectiveness will be improved by regular maintenance of the water-repellent surface layer.

Once the clothing has been washed, we recommend using a product that restores the surface water-repellent finish. This is, for example: Nikwax TX Direct.

Down equipment should be stored unpacked or in storage bags (sleeping bags) in dry and cool places away from direct sunlight. If the equipment gets wet, it needs to be thoroughly aired out before being stored again, and then you need to make sure it is completely dry. If airing alone is not sufficient, the equipment can be dried in a dryer set to a low temperature and for a short time. This will completely dry the feathers and restore their loft.

As this is a relatively complicated process, we recommend using professional cleaning services to wash down equipment. We can arrange professional cleaning for products purchased from us. For more information, please visit our stores or contact us at the following email addresses info@nalehko.cz or praha@nalehko.cz.

However, if you wish to wash your down equipment yourself, follow these instructions:

  • Wash by hand or in a washing machine on a very gentle cycle at 30°C using a specialized detergent Nikwax Down Wash Direct.
  • Rinse the product thoroughly to remove any detergent residue. If you are washing a product divided into individual compartments filled with feathers, use a towel or other cloth as a support when removing it from the washing machine to wrap the product in. This will prevent the weight of the wet, heavy feathers from damaging the structure of the individual compartments.
  • Immediately start the drying process at a lower temperature in a certified dryer.
  • Every 20 – 30 minutes take out the product from the dryer and level/even out the feather distribution in each compartment to increase the final loft.
  • Don't stop drying too soon. Although the outer fabric may feel dry and warm to the touch, the feathers inside the chambers may still be damp and clumped together.
  • The drying time depends on the type of product and its size, but usually takes 4–5 hours.
  • After drying, it is recommended to store down products loosely spread out in a dry, cool place. Before first use, continue airing for two days.

My jacket doesn't look the same after washing as it did before.

Before and after washing a down jacket

If, after washing, the feathers in individual compartments are stuck together or appear to have disappeared completely, there is no need to panic. This does not necessarily mean that the jacket is defective or irreparably damaged. It is likely that the fabric has not been dried sufficiently, causing the feathers to stick together or move into neighboring chambers, and therefore need to be returned to their original place. In this case, please wash the product again and carefully follow the drying instructions described above.
