The Big Agnes Pitchpine VST 1.5 single-wall, three-season tent with a single-pole design is an ultralight shelter inspired by the users of the iconic American brand Big Agnes. It expands the VST series in our lineup and offers an alternative to the String Ridge VST 1.5, which is set up using trekking poles.

The new line reflects the feedback Big Agnes receives from its users. These are the lightest, most spacious, and best-ventilated products in the BA lineup. The unique design utilizes what is typically dead space as storage for gear while also allowing for the use of rectangular footprints.  

HyperBead™

The tent and floor utilize a new, proprietary, patented material treatment technology HyperBead™. In addition to being free of harmful substances, it offers a whole range of benefits. Thanks to this innovative waterproof treatment, the tents are lighter, stronger, and more durable. In short, exactly what we want and value in an ultralight tent.

Because the String Ridge VST and Pitchpine VST tents are not freestanding, tensioning the tent is key to stability.& nbsp;HyperBead™ polyester fabric maintains minimal stretch even when wet and naturally repels water. Combined with guy lines made of ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (one of the strongest fibers in the world), VST tents remain taut and stable even in extreme weather.  

In terms of numbers, according to the manufacturer, tents featuring HyperBead™ technology have the following parameters compared to conventional materials:

• 6% lighter 
• 25% higher water resistance
• 65% greater strength

HyperBead™ does not contain PFAS or other harmful substances.

Generous space and thoughtful details

The Big Agnes Pitchpine VST 1.5 is designed to provide maximum usable space. The total area is 2 m², with an interior height of 102 cm and a length of 224 cm. You can comfortably fit inside even with a 63 cm wide sleeping pad and backpack. Or a four-legged companion. In a pinch, and if you’re really close, even with another hiker. For backpacks, there’s a spacious 0.8 m² vestibule (maximum width 64 cm). It’s separated from the interior by durable polyester mesh, which is also used around the tent’s perimeter.

The integrated ventilation system is very well designed. Combined with the hybrid single-double wall construction, it effectively eliminates condensation. It consists of a tunnel at the top of the tent, which is also equipped with mesh to keep out pesky insects.

Ventilation can be further increased by rolling up the vestibule. To secure the rolled-up entrance, the designers at Big Agnes used small magnets instead of grommets. A small detail that adds incredibly to the comfort.

Single-pole construction

To set up the tent, first stake down the corners. Then raise the main pole in a cross shape and attach the tent to it from the center using plastic hooks. Secure the crossbar into the prepared loops with H-clips. Then, simply tension the tent’s side panels using the guy lines with drawstring clips. Fast, efficient, and convenient—all by one person. 

The guy lines are also the only element that remains reflective. This is purely for practical reasons. The VST series is therefore also suitable for places where you don’t want to be completely visible.

To extend the lifespan of the tent, Big Agnes recommends setting up the Pitchpine VST 1.5 on the original footprint. However, the time-tested Tyvek will do the same job for you.
