The Klymit Insulated Static V is the insulated version of the Klymit Static V. While it isn’t the lightest item in our lineup, it is a full-fledged three-season sleeping pad at a very reasonable price.

Width and Comfort

Like most Klymit sleeping pads Klymit it is exceptionally wide – 58 cm. Combined with Body Mapping technology and a unique V-shaped chamber design featuring slightly raised side chambers, it ensures excellent comfort, reduced air movement within the chambers, and consequently lower heat loss.

Ergonomic design

The chambers also ergonomically conform to the natural contours of the back when sleeping on your back, while the edge chambers provide support when rolling over and sleeping on your side. With a thickness of 6 cm, it provides maximum comfort for all “sleeper types.”  All this at a still-reasonable 530 grams, and the packed size measures a compact 18 x 10 cm. 

Material and Seasonal Use

The material is proven 75D polyester, which is used on most of Klymiťák’s “heavier” sleeping pads. According to the manufacturer, the mat is suitable for three seasons through winter. The stated thermal resistance R = 4.4 corresponds to this, but according to the new unified standard ASTM F3340-18 , the actual thermal resistance is R = 1.9; more on this below. We therefore recommend the mat for the spring-fall season as usual.

Valve and Inflation

The sleeping pad features a newer Flip Valve and can be inflated with approximately 10–15 breaths. Alternatively, you can purchase the Klymit Rapid Air Pad Pump.  More comfortable adventurers and gadget lovers can try Flextail Zero Pump or  Flextail Tiny Pump X.  This sleeping pad is ideal for those who aren’t counting every gram, but for whom price and comfort are also key factors.

New Standard and Practical Experience

Since 2021, the manufacturer has been listing the thermal resistance value measured according to the new ASTM F3340-18 standard on the sleeping pad packaging. This standard aims to unify the measurement method for all sleeping pad manufacturers. According to Klymit, nothing has changed in the design of the sleeping pads, and they are still suitable for cold conditions just as before. We can confirm this from our own experience, as we have spent dozens of nights sleeping on these models in sub-freezing temperatures. Based on the measurement results, it is quite clear that under the new standard, sleeping pads with an internal reflective layer—such as Therm-a-Rest pads—will perform best.

In our opinion, Klymit sleeping pads exhibit heat loss in the areas where the internal synthetic insulation is compressed. However, the standard does not account for one major advantage of these sleeping pads. Thanks to the shape of their chambers, the space between the chambers is filled by the filling of the sleeping bag. This creates space for additional insulation. This is not the case with “flat” sleeping pads. In our opinion, Klymit sleeping pads will perform just as well in cold conditions in practice. In laboratory tests where a sleeping bag is not used, they will simply perform worse.
