The Mountainsmith Shelter LT is made of lightweight 40D rip-stop nylon with a silicone coating on the outside (excellent UV resistance and a water-repellent surface) and a PU coating on the inside (ensuring complete waterproofing). It features a large number of tensioning points and reflective drawstrings, and an incredible 5m² of covered area! And as is customary at NALEHKO—we tested it for you on the 320 km John Muir Trail.

A Long Tradition

Mountainsmith has been active on the American market for over 30 years, and its name is synonymous with highly durable, rugged gear. In 2013, the company responded to the ultralight trend and came out with a few excellent products. Their entry into this segment was a huge success, as the prestigious Backpacker magazine immediately recognized their Mountain Shelter LT in its 2013 gear review as the tent that gives you the “most bang for your buck.”

The workmanship is excellent, with an emphasis on detail—assembly instructions printed on the packaging, a scale for adjusting pole length printed directly on the bottom edge of the tent—and for that, it deserves recognition. As Backpacker’s testers noted: “It’s very unusual when the lightest tent tested is also the cheapest and most spacious.” The only minor drawback I can think of is that if you’re sleeping as a couple in connected sleeping bags, the poles might get in the way a bit. But even that’s easy to fix—just place the poles at a slight angle (they’re pointed down, so there’s no risk of them sliding away) and the problem is solved.
