The Gossamer Gear G4-20 backpack is based on the first version of the ultralight, now legendary G4 backpack, which was designed about 25 years ago by Gossamer’s founder—Glen van Peski. At the time, it was Gossamer Gear’s very first ultralight backpack model. The 2024 model features a new, more durable material that is also recycled. This material is now used across the entire Gossamer Gear backpack lineup. Otherwise, everything else remains the same.
Simplicity is power
It features a frameless, lightweight construction with all the elements that make Gossamer Gear backpacks stand out. With a volume of 42 liters (including pockets), it falls somewhere between the Kumo and Mariposa, yet it weighs an impressive 700 grams (in size M, including the back panel). The body of the backpack is made of durable 70D Robic Nylon, just like most other models. The areas subject to the most stress are reinforced with 100D Nylon. On the back of the backpack is a classic "Gossamer" elastic pocket containing a brand-new molded foam pad. You can use this as a seat pad. It also has ventilation holes in the body to improve airflow and doesn’t absorb sweat, so you won’t be putting a backpack with a wet back on your shoulders during breaks. Compared to older inserts in other models, this new one is relatively easier to remove. Personally, we use a folded foam mat in the back of our backpack, which we then also use for sleeping under an inflatable mat (the inflatable mat doesn’t slip on it and it further improves insulation from the ground).

Roll-top
As usual, the backpack features a large, expandable roll-top collar, allowing you to pack it exactly as you need. The roll-top can be closed in two ways. Either fold the collar with the buckles upward and fasten them like a duffel bag, or clip the buckles to the side straps on the sides of the backpack. A major advantage is that the straps are removable, so you can choose the roll-top closure method that suits you best. The entire contents of the backpack can then be secured with a strap across the lid. This strap is also removable.
Pockets
A huge mesh pocket on the front of the backpack has become a standard feature; it easily fits everything you want to have on hand during the day (jacket, pants, filter, snack, etc.). We’ve really grown to love this feature on Gossamer backpacks and can’t get enough of it! The pocket is sufficiently stretchy, and thanks to its breathability, it’s also great for drying clothes and the like. Unlike the minimalist model Kumo, the G4-20 already features a high-quality, padded hip belt, but unlike the Gorilla or Mariposa, it is not removable and has a different circumference for each back size. Of course, the hip belt also features high-quality, large zippered pockets. These easily fit a standard smartphone, a small compact camera, energy bars, and other small items you want to keep close at hand. An interesting feature is the large zippered pocket under the lid, which is easily accessible without having to unfasten the lid buckles. We sometimes struggled with this on its siblings—Kuma or Mariposy. There are two classic pockets on the side of the backpack. One is lower for easier access to a water bottle while walking, and the other is relatively high, so it’s useful for storing tent poles or trekking poles. Of course, there are also simple compression straps on the sides.

Comfortable and wide shoulder straps
The shoulder straps are traditionally quite wide and superbly padded, making the backpack very comfortable even when worn all day. Of course, it also features an adjustable chest strap with a whistle. Most pouches can be easily attached to the shoulder straps thanks to the sewn-on straps and D-rings. The G4-20 will be comfortable to carry with a load of around 13 kg, but it can certainly handle about 2 kg more. Because the design is frameless, it will require a bit more careful packing of your gear into the backpack so that nothing gets in the way of your back. Thanks to the high-quality hip belt and larger capacity, it will be suitable for all experienced hikers who already have their basic gear sorted out but need a roomier backpack with better weight transfer to the hip belt.
