The Gossamer Gear Gorilla 50 V2 is a whole new beast. Just like the larger Mariposa, the Gorilla has received a significant upgrade in the form of a new back system, recycled materials, and other details. Recycled 70D Robic Nylon on the body of the backpack and 100D Robic Nylon on the bottom make it significantly more durable than the previous model, which already had no issues with durability. The new Gorilla will last for thousands of kilometers with you.

New back panel construction

The most significant change is the completely new back panel construction called PVT. It now features a lightweight aluminum frame in the back that can be removed from the backpack, allowing for the replacement of the hip belt. The frame is housed in a simple pocket within the hip belt so that it can adapt even better to the movement of the pelvis while walking. Switching to a different size is now much easier. In size S, the backpack comes with a hip belt in the curved version and size S/M. Backpacks in sizes M and L come with a hip belt in the standard straight version and size M. The Gorilla has "balance straps"!

Yes, the only criticism the Gorilla sometimes faced was the lack of balance straps, but that’s no longer the case! With the new frame, which is raised about 10 cm above the shoulder straps, the Gorilla now has proper balance straps. "Load-lifters" positioned above shoulder level thus do their job much more effectively and shift the center of gravity closer to your back, just as you need. However, you need to pay closer attention when choosing the right back length—not only so the backpack fits perfectly on your back, but also to ensure those balance straps function properly. Everything else we love about the Gorilla remains. Large side pockets and a giant mesh pocket on the front. Compression straps. Easy and quick access, plus a flat zippered pocket in the lid. Of course, the generously comfortable shoulder straps remain true to the Gossamer Gear tradition.

Gorilla vs Mariposa

Why choose the Gorilla over the Mariposa when the weight and price are very similar and the Gorilla is slightly smaller? The weight of a complete Mariposa in size M is 968 g, while the Gorilla weighs 905 g. But once you’ve packed everything you can into the Mariposa—it’s swallowed up all your gear—there’s no way to cinch it down, and it looks pretty bulky. Not to mention that it’s really too big for a daypack… That’s where the Gorilla comes in—it has compression straps so you can use it for quick day trips, but it can also easily carry a full week’s worth of gear and food if you’re heading out on a longer trek.
