The Bear Vault Food Canister BV450-Jaunt® is one of the most widely used food storage canisters on the market. Bear canisters are generally becoming an increasingly common way to prevent problems with wildlife attracted by the smell of our food or personal hygiene items. Especially in certain areas of the U.S. where the most famous long-distance trails are located, bear canisters have long been mandatory equipment that local rangers check quite regularly. If you don’t have a canister, you may face a fairly hefty fine, but more importantly, you’re putting your own safety at risk. Before you hit the trail

• Bears have a very sensitive sense of smell; be aware that almost everything leaves some kind of scent trail.

Basic Camping Principles

• If you arrive at a campsite where there are obvious signs of bear activity, try to find another, more remote location.
• It is essential to separate the areas for sleeping, cooking, and food storage. Try to keep these areas at least 60 meters apart.
• Try to cook and store food before dark.
• Wash dishes far enough away from your sleeping area. Dry clothes away from your tent as well.
• Do not eat anything inside the tent, and do not use anything that might leave a scent trail.
• Try to pack all trash and food scraps into a bear canister as well. Do not leave anything where you sleep or where you cooked.

What to do if a bear approaches the campsite

• Let the bear know you’re there. A loud human voice (no screaming) is a great deterrent.
• Gather together, make noise, wave your arms.
• Bears don’t like being cornered. Give them an escape route.
• If you have bear spray, get it ready.
• Never run away from a bear.
