Granite Gear is introducing another backpack in the 20–30-liter range for this season. In addition to the popular Dagger 22 model, we’ve also added the significantly lighter yet roomier Scurry 24 to our lineup. The lower weight is primarily due to the absence of back reinforcement and the roll-top closure of the main compartment, which saves on the weight of the main zipper. In terms of design, the Scurry 24 will be similar to the Virga 26 or Virga 3, which also prioritize the lowest possible weight.

Everything you need

Despite its low weight, the Scurry 24 still offers everything a backpack needs for day trips or weekend excursions. It features two mesh pockets on the sides that can hold 1–1.5-liter bottles, depending on how full the backpack is. A stabilizing hip belt ensures a secure fit around the waist, the upper part of the shoulder straps can be adjusted with balance straps, and there is a height-adjustable chest strap. Two loops at the bottom of the backpack hold trekking poles or an ice axe, and the entire backpack can be cinched down using two compression straps. Surprisingly, these straps have enough range to even allow for external attachment of a sleeping pad Therm-a-rest Z-Lite or thin foam mats. Don’t expect too many zippers on the Scurry 24. The main compartment is accessed via a roll-top closure, which is further secured with an additional buckle.

For CamelBak enthusiasts, the Scurry 24 features a separate pocket, a loop, and an outlet for a hydration bladder. The only zipper on the backpack is on the front utility pocket, which can hold all the small items you need to have on hand—from snacks to ultralight waterproof jacket. The pocket also features a key loop so you’ll never have to search the entire backpack for your keys again. A small detail that makes a big difference. The Scurry 24 is made from highly durable yet lightweight 100D and 210D Robic Nylon, which are highly abrasion-resistant and can withstand a lot of moisture. However, the backpack itself is not waterproof. Granite Gear lists the backpack’s maximum load capacity at 9 kg, which means the Scurry 24 is best suited for shorter one- or two-day trips; however, for die-hard fans of the “lightweight” style, packing for multiple days won’t be a problem.
