Following the phenomenal success of the Rab Ultrasphere 4.5 sleeping pad (winner of the prestigious ISPO Awards 2023), we are introducing an updated version Rab Ultrasphere 5.

Rab Ultrasphere 5

The main advancement lies in the new design of offset chambers. Combined with TILT technology, this design traps heat inside the structure, eliminating the need for bulky insulation and thereby saving weight. The Rab Ultrasphere 5 sleeping pad thus achieves an impressive thermal resistance of R=5.5 at a fantastic weight of 440 grams (Regular size).

We can confidently recommend the Rab Ultrasphere 5 for long-distance routes, bikepacking and generally any overnight stay outdoors from early spring to late fall.

TILT Technology

The TILT (Thermo Ionic Lining) reflective foil reduces heat loss through radiation, while the arrangement of internal partitions reduces heat loss through convection. This ensures you can recharge for tomorrow, even if the temperature drops. A major advantage is that the inner foil does not curl at all, so it remains sufficiently quiet even when you move around. Thanks to these technologies, the sleeping pad  a very good thermal resistance value of R = 5.5, making it a fully-fledged three-season sleeping pad.

For use on snow, however, we would still recommend adding a foam pad. 

Sustainability

Rab, as a climate-neutral company, naturally uses recycled materials in its production. The outer material is recycled 20D polyester with an inner layer of TPU and fluorocarbon-free DWR. The outer fabric also features a gradient print that helps keep the sleeping bag in the same position.

Simple and quick inflation

Rabu really nailed the valve. It’s located on the bottom of the mat near the head; it’s flat and therefore doesn’t get in the way at all. To inflate, simply flip open the first cap and you can start inflating right away; in this case, air enters the mat in only one direction (it cannot deflate). When you want to deflate the mat, just flip open the second cap and the air is out in a second. Deflating is surprisingly easy and fast.

The package also includes a great inflatable bag. In our opinion, it is the best inflatable bag we have ever seen. It is huge, but weighs only 70 grams. It’s incredibly easy to fill with air, has taped seams, and can easily be turned into a fully functional waterproof bag that you can use, for example, as a cover for your sleeping bag. You can inflate the mat in about 3 pumps. Easy and fast—we give it 10 out of 10 here.

Great cover

Another thing Rab really nailed is the perfect sleeping pad bag. It works completely differently from all the traditional bags from other manufacturers. It’s basically a simple pouch with an elastic hem, into which you can very easily place the rolled-up sleeping pad, and the opening is covered by a simple “lid” with integrated elastic bands. There’s no struggle when packing it up. Packing is truly a breeze. Inside the cover, you’ll also find a small pocket with a repair kit.

Dimensions

It is available in three sizes. All versions are "mummy" shaped and the same height—a wonderfully comfortable 8 cm (we measured 7,7 ± 0,1 cm).

We recommend placing Tyvek under every inflatable mat, as it significantly reduces the risk of punctures.

The Rab Ultrasphere 5 confidently confirms its role as the successor to one of the lightest full-featured three-season sleeping pads on the market. With an additional foam pad, it will serve you well even in milder winter conditions.
