Rab Ascendor

The days of classic thick fleeces are likely well and truly over, and in recent years, lighter pieces with textured fleece have been taking center stage. Proof of this is the Ascendor mid-layer series, which became one of Rab’s absolute bestsellers last season. This line, available in various styles and combinations, is based on the recycled "Rab-developed" Thermic material.

Materials

In the case of the Rab Ascendor Pro Hoody, this is the improved Thermic™ Pro Hybrid Fleece. It features enhanced wind protection compared to the Thermic™ G used in the previous Ascendor.& nbsp;This is the result of new weaving techniques that allow for the creation of woven fleece fabrics that previously had to be knitted. At the same time, the material is more durable yet still wonderfully soft and flexible.& It is combined with the lightweight Matrix™ softshell, which you may recognize from our best-selling jackets Borealis or the Torque pants.  

Rab Ascendor Pro Hoody

It follows the proven "mapping" of materials based on the anticipated physiological load. The windproof fleece is complemented by a superbly breathable softshell on the back, underarms, and hood. The Rab Ascendor works perfectly with a backpack and helmet (hood fits under the helmet), while underarm panels ensure adequate ventilation. Airflow can be further enhanced by unbuttoning the chest pockets. The manufacturer claims these are large enough even for ski touring skins.

Honestly, given today’s trend of “at least 100 underfoot,” I’d take this information with a grain of salt. I can imagine it being more suitable for backcountry cross-country ski skins. All zippers are YKK, and the central one features a pull tab for easy operation while wearing gloves. The bottom hem can be adjusted with one hand.

You can use the Rab Ascendor Pro Hoody as a classic mid-layer. Thanks to its improved wind-resistant material, however, you can also wear it as an outer jacket. It’s best suited for active movement in winter conditions (ski mountaineering, mountaineering, cross-country skiing), but of course nothing prevents its versatile year-round use, whether for running, cycling, rock climbing, via ferrata, or hiking.
