When Václav showed me the new Rab ski touring pants Rab Tour, I couldn’t hide my excitement. Awesome, lightweight all-rounders for Czech winters. As I wrote, "I’d take them for a quick 'slope' hike before work, as well as for a full-day hike on Krakonoš". And that’s exactly what happened. I put them through their paces last winter, and they basically became my go-to ski touring boots right away.

But when Krakonoš gets angry, or I get a day off work and head out to tackle bigger mountains, sometimes a slightly heavier-duty pair comes in handy—the Rab Tour Plus.   

Rab Tour Plus:

They fit me right away because they’re basically an insulated version of the aforementioned Rab Tour. The only difference is the addition of mesh-covered zippered ventilation openings on the side, which are essentially unnecessary on the ultralight Rab Tour. This also makes the new Rab Tour Plus more versatile, as they provide excellent ventilation even during strenuous activity in warmer conditions. At the same time, they’re perfect for those who are more sensitive to the cold, or for leisurely hikers who prefer a slower pace. Or for those who frequently wait for their significant others.

I’m thrilled with the pants because the rest is essentially the same as the lightweight version I fell in love with. Two large thigh pockets (the right pocket has an inner security pocket) and one smaller pocket on the right thigh. The waistband is partially elastic and adjustable with Velcro on both sides. The fly zipper is one-way.

The leg cuffs are typical for ski mountaineering. The inner gaiter with an elastic hem featuring a non-slip finish is covered by an outer zippered leg cuff with two snaps for adjusting the circumference. I should mention here that both legs are sufficiently stretchy/wide even for really sturdy freeride/splitboard boots. 

Materials:

The main material is Rab’s time-tested softshell. You may recognize it from countless Rab products, such as the best-selling Borealis and the Torque pants. The Rab Tour Plus pants feature a three-layer membrane construction with an inner fleece lining weighing 215 g/m². The inner ankle area is reinforced with durable material to protect against ski edges and crampons (54% Polyamide, 33% Polyester, 13% Polyurethane).

Rab Tour are excellent ski touring pants for demanding conditions. They also hold their own during classic mountaineering or backcountry expeditions.
