Rab Neutrino 600 – Why Choose a Rab Sleeping Bag?
It has been nearly 40 years since Rab Carrington began hand-sewing the first sleeping bag to bear his name in a small house in Sheffield. His initial designs were based on his mountaineering experience. The goal was to create high-quality, lightweight, and warm sleeping bags that would perform well in the mountains. That’s exactly what Rab does—lightweight and reliable. He thinks through the details and comes up with new materials. Like when, in the 1990s, he first used Pertex fabric, which is still used today to make the most durable down products or waterproof clothing that you can pack into a small bundle. Simply put, we’re talking about gear you’d rather repair than throw away. Rab has long been among the absolute world leaders in down products. Their sleeping bags are filled at a factory in Derbyshire, UK. This ensures absolute control over the fact that the sleeping bags have never been improperly stored or compressed.
Rab Neutrino 600
The manufacturer has really put a lot of effort into the new models. They’ve improved both the fabric and the design to create warmer yet lighter sleeping bags. In addition, they’ve introduced an innovative chamber design that allows for more efficient use of the down’s properties and prevents down from shifting within the chambers and the formation of cold spots. The Neutrino features a 100% recycled Pertex Quantum outer fabric with a DWR water-repellent finish, which has a lower weight than Pertex Quantum Pro and is slightly more breathable and softer. Thanks to its low weight, the sleeping bag is ideal for multi-day treks, and with 600 grams of down fill, it performs well even in winter conditions. The high-quality DWR finish easily handles morning dew and sleeping under the open sky. The sleeping bag is filled with 600 grams of premium goose down with a fill power of 800FP. The down has a hydrophobic finish from Nikwax. Thanks to this, it better withstands moisture, dries faster, and regains its full loft. All down used by Rab naturally meets the R.D.S. certification of origin. Rab focused primarily on the design and technical details of the sleeping bag. Despite its low weight, the sleeping bag is very spacious. Rab has particularly succeeded in creating a technically sophisticated hood and a perfectly shaped inner collar. Everything can, of course, be comfortably adjusted. There is also an inner zippered pocket for storing a headlamp, phone, etc. The "foot box" is particularly great; it’s shaped like a fin, giving you plenty of room for your feet. The trapezoidal chamber construction eliminates cold spots. The 3/4-length two-way YKK zipper is sufficient and certainly won’t cause any major issues.
Comfort
Rabu now measures comfort temperature according to the EN1357:2016 standard. Of course, we are all different, so the temperatures listed here should be taken more as a guide for choosing the right sleeping bag. The standard is based on the parameters of an average man—25 years old, 173 cm, 73 kg—and a standard woman—25 years old, 160 cm, and 60 kg. The temperatures listed represent a range derived from a series of measurements, spanning from the upper temperature limit at which a person can sleep through the night without waking up to the extreme temperature that determines the minimum temperature at which a person can survive. Rab specifies comfort temperature (the ideal temperature you should use as a basis when choosing a sleeping bag), limit temperature (the temperature at which a standard man can remain at rest for 8 hours without waking up), extreme limit (this should be taken as a guide to how the sleeping bag would perform in an emergency situation, not as a recommended use case. It refers to the temperature at which an average woman can remain for 6 hours without risk of death from hypothermia). In addition, Rab provides the so-called "Rab Limit", which is based on their own experience and that of athletes and is considered a reasonable limit for the usability of a sleeping bag.
