Small "city backpacks" are a bit of a rarity in our lineup; the main focus is on larger that can take you on even the longest and most famous trails in the world. In response to numerous requests, we’ve decided to add a model from this category to our lineup—specifically the Sawbill 20 from the iconic American brand Granite Gear.

The Granite Gear Sawbill backpack is lightweight (170 grams), yet durable (made of 100D nylon)—a 20-liter pack ideal for day trips, whether from the comfort of home or from "base camp." It’s also great for everyday use for school or work. It easily fits my 14-inch laptop with plenty of room to spare for other essentials like a snack, a drink, and a change of clothes. The manufacturer’s stated weight capacity is 6.8 kg.

The backpack has one large main compartment that closes with a drawstring, featuring a separate compartment for a hydration bladder. On the outside, there’s mesh that increases the backpack’s capacity and plenty of loops for attaching all sorts of essentials. The shoulder straps are well-made and breathable. It also features a chest strap. The Granite Gear Sawbill backpack has no frame or stiffeners, making it surprisingly easy to pack. I can partly imagine it as additional luggage for bikepacking, typically for an evening shopping trip before reaching the campsite. For these purposes, however, we do have more suitable options in our lineup, such as those from Apidura or STS.
