This year’s Mountainsmith Scream 55 model features several changes, which we’ll get to one by one. But we have to point out that, fortunately, these changes are a step in the right direction. The Scream 55 is the perfect choice for those who want a lightweight yet spacious, durable, and superbly crafted backpack that will likely last a lifetime. Thanks to the padded back panel and excellent hip belt, the backpack can comfortably carry up to 20 kg, making it the ideal choice for transitioning to ultralight gear. Weighing just 1,250 g, you can build the foundation of your ultralight setup around it, and it can easily handle even a pile of gear that isn’t quite “fine-tuned” yet.

Durable material

The foundation of the entire backpack is 210D Robic Dynajin Nylon Ripstop with an Ultra Tear-Strength finish. This material is incredibly abrasion-resistant and water-resistant. The interior of the backpack is made from 100% recycled nylon.

Sturdy and comfortable back panel

The back panel has been completely redesigned. The central aluminum rod has been replaced by a minimalist perimeter frame. The back padding has a more ergonomic shape and is made of EVA foam, which is more comfortable to the touch. Inside the backpack, on the back, there is a spacious pocket for a hydration bladder.

Hip belt and shoulder straps

The hip belt has been improved in terms of the pockets, which are now more spacious than ever. Both pockets are zippered and can easily accommodate even the largest smartphones. The padding on both the hip belt and shoulder straps is similar to that of the previous model, but the 3D mesh has been redesigned; it is now softer and more comfortable to the touch. As usual, the shoulder straps feature a height-adjustable chest strap, which is mounted on a "slider," making it very easy to adjust.

Roll top

Access to the backpack is via a roll-top closure at the top, which is long enough to allow the backpack to be significantly "inflated" without any issues. In addition to the top opening, the Scream also features a U-shaped zippered front opening. The zipper has now been replaced with a more robust version, which should increase its overall durability. Thanks to this design, you can easily access items stored deep inside the backpack.

Spacious pockets

Another change has been made to the front zippered pockets. These are now positioned one above the other rather than side by side. They are spacious enough to hold even bulkier items such as clothing, food, a water filter, etc. The side mesh pockets are spacious enough to fit even larger water bottles. Four side straps are perfect for compression and overall adjustment of the backpack. There are also balance straps to pull the load closer to your back. A nice addition is the inclusion of two straps on the bottom of the backpack, which you can use to secure items like a foam sleeping pad or a larger tent to the bottom of the backpack.

The backpack is now manufactured in only one back length for people with a back length of 49 to 56 cm.
