Are you planning winter hiking or ski touring at higher heart rates that involve a lot of sweating? Or are you heading into a humid environment where rain will be the norm throughout your trip? In such cases, it’s worth considering synthetic insulation. Down is the best insulator in terms of weight-to-performance ratio, but it also has some drawbacks. It requires more maintenance and does not fare well with sweat and moisture. It’s mostly used as static insulation, when you’re not moving and need to compensate for heat loss caused by lower physical activity. However, if you want to keep the insulating layer on constantly, sweat into it as much as possible, expose it to excessive moisture, and on top of that subject it to as much mechanical stress as possible, synthetic insulation might be a better choice.

The Rab Cirrus Alpine is exactly that kind of synthetic jacket. It is filled with 233 grams (in size L) of recycled Cirrus HL™ synthetic insulation. The outer fabric is made of proven recycled Pertex Quantum with a DWR finish. The main one-way YKK zipper runs the full length and is lined with a flap to prevent heat loss. The inside of the neck features a comfortable microfleece lining to protect the chin. The two side pockets also feature YKK zippers and are deep enough to store a hat or gloves. The hood fits snugly under a helmet and features an elastic hem for adjustment. Elastic cuffs are also used to adjust the sleeves. To prevent cold wind from entering under the jacket, the bottom hem features an integrated drawcord.

The Rab Cirrus Alpine is ideal for winter layering, either as a warm mid-layer or as an outer layer. It’s the perfect choice wherever excessive moisture, dirt, sweat, or mechanical stress would be too damaging for down insulation.
