Everyone would love to have versatile gear that works in all conditions. But in most cases, such gear simply doesn’t work. The Big Agnes Roxy Ann 15F sleeping system, however, is one of the few exceptions. Some time ago, the American manufacturer Big Agnes introduced interesting system sleeping bags featuring a pocket on the back for a sleeping pad. Now, however, the manufacturer is introducing a completely new system with a much more interesting design. It actually consists of two sleeping bags.

Outer down blanket

The foundation is an outer sleeping bag that resembles a quilt more than a standard sleeping bag. It is essentially a very spacious down blanket, but it features a simple system on the back that allows you to easily attach it to a sleeping pad. This ensures you won’t slide off the pad, as often happens with classic sleeping bags. This blanket has an enclosed foot area, which eliminates cold spots. The two-way zippers on both sides are also great, offering a wide range of ventilation options. This blanket is primarily intended for use on warmer nights. Since there is no filling on the back, your sleeping pad is the only source of insulation from the ground. It is therefore important to keep this in mind and, on colder nights, ideally choose sleeping pads with a higher R-value. It is clear that the manufacturer has thought of every detail. That’s why it also features a handy “sleeve” for attaching a pillow to the back system, which again significantly increases sleeping comfort.

Filling

The filling consists of certified DownTek™ duck down with a fill power of 650FP and a hydrophobic treatment free of harmful fluorocarbons. Thanks to this treatment, the down handles moisture much better, retains its loft, and dries faster. The outer down blanket has a fill weight of 255 grams of down and a total weight of 652 grams in the regular size. The outer and inner materials are made of 100% recycled polyester, which naturally features a high-quality, fluorocarbon-free DWR water-repellent finish. Every Big Agnes sleeping bag features a blue tag with a QR code that allows you to easily trace the origin of the down used to fill the sleeping bag.

Inner sleeping bag

The crowning touch of the entire system is an additional sleeping bag that opens up a wider range of uses. When you place it inside the outer down blanket, you get a great set that truly deserves the label “three- to four-season.” With this combination, you no longer need to worry about even the harshest frosts. This sleeping bag features a standard hood to prevent heat loss on colder nights. An interesting detail is the zipper’s placement in the center of the bag, which is particularly beneficial for side sleepers. This zipper runs 3/4 of the length and is, of course, a two-way zipper with an anti-snag design. The Roxy Ann version is primarily designed for women, which is why the inner sleeping bag contains significantly more down than its sibling Lost Ranger 15F. The inner sleeping bag is filled with 510 grams of duck down DownTek™ with a fill power of 650FP and has an excellent total weight of 765 grams. Combining the outer and inner sleeping bags gives you 765 grams of down and a total weight of 1502 grams, which is still a very acceptable weight for a four-season sleeping system that you can easily convert into a summer, ultralight version.

Compatibility with sleeping pads

The sleeping pad attachment system works with the vast majority of sleeping pads that are 51–76 cm wide and 183–198 cm long.

Comfort

When it comes to temperature ratings, Big Agnes relies primarily on its own experience and that of its testers and ambassadors. The combination of both sleeping bags has a comfort limit of -9 °C.  This corresponds to the ISO 23537-1 standard (male – 25 years old, 173 cm, 73 kg – 8 hours of sleep in a curled position without waking up). In our opinion, and based on a comparison with Criterion and Rab sleeping bags, we would say that comfort will correspond to approximately -5 °C, but all of this data must, of course, be taken with a grain of salt, as there are many factors that influence thermal comfort. The separate outer sleeping bag has a stated "comfort" rating of +10°C, and the inner sleeping bag +2°C.
