The Gossamer Gear Mirage 40 backpack is a new release from the American brand Gossamer Gear, part of its new series The Alchemy Collection. The Mirage 40 is the largest model in this series and is complemented by the Murmur 36 and Elixir 20.

The Alchemy Collection

It represents a new generation of ultralight gear, where top-of-the-line materials meet innovative construction. This collection was created with a clear goal: to push the boundaries of what is possible in the ultralight world, and it reflects over 30 years of experience. It perfectly captures the philosophy of the Gossamer Gear brand — "Take less, do more".

ALUULA Graflyte®

At its core is the revolutionary material ALUULA Graflyte®, a monomer (PE) free of surface treatments and adhesives. This makes it exceptionally lightweight, durable, and water-resistant, with no risk of delamination or fraying. The material is also highly resistant to UV radiation.

Made from 100% Aluula fabric, the backpack offers an unparalleled strength-to-weight ratio. Aluula is **30% lighter and 30% stronger** than high-end nylon fabrics.

Instead of traditional stitching, the collection uses welding technology that minimizes seams and increases overall strength and moisture protection. The result is backpacks and accessories that are not only extremely lightweight but also fully functional in demanding conditions.

Gossamer Gear Mirage 40

The backpack features a unique carbon frame construction, which is a first for Gossamer Gear backpacks.

It features a lightweight X-shaped carbon frame, which is covered by a tensioned mesh in the style of "trampoline" backpacks – this system appears to be fully functional in terms of the backpack's fit on the back and air circulation.

Combined with shoulder straps and an EVA foam hip belt, it ensures high comfort even with a maximum load of 11.3 kg. Of course, the hip belt can be detached, reducing the total weight of the backpack to 490 grams.

In terms of design, the backpack is faithful to Gossamer Gear bestsellers such as Mariposa or the similarly sized Kumo. The main compartment is complemented by two side pockets and a spacious front mesh pocket. The closure features a "roll-top" design for maximum use of the backpack's capacity.

Don’t expect any small pockets for odds and ends here. However, you can add a shoulder strap pocket Shoulder Strap Pocket or a hip belt pocket Hipbelt Pocket made from the same ALUULA Graflyte® material.   

However, it does include a grommet for a CamelBak hose.

The Gossamer Gear Mirage 40 backpack is perfect for trekkers with streamlined gear who can pack everything they need while staying within the 11 kg weight limit.

Backpack Size

The Mirage 40 is available in one size, and although this backpack is suitable for a wide range of body types, it is best suited for back lengths 40 to 51 cm and waist circumferences 75 to 112 cm.

Start measuring at the C7 vertebra at the base of your neck. The best way to find it is to bend your neck and feel for the first protrusion at the base of your neck. This protrusion is the point from which you will measure. You can find the lower point by placing your hands on your hipbones on both sides and touching your thumbs together on your spine—it is located where your thumbs meet.
