The new Rab Aeon ND 33 backpacks are a real success for this British manufacturer this year. In addition to the fairly specialized running backpacks Aeon Ultra, they’ve also introduced a more general hiking line. This line is perfect for day trips, quick alpine ascents, and “hut-to-hut” treks, and more experienced hikers who already have their gear sorted out will have no trouble packing everything they need into the backpack, even for a weekend trip.

Water-resistant material

The Rab Aeon ND 33 is made from durable 70D x 140D fabric, which also features a Trishield coating with a 1500 mm water column. For rain protection, the integrated rain cover located in a pocket at the bottom of the backpack comes in handy. This is a nice bonus that isn’t commonly found on most lightweight backpacks.

Ventilated, adjustable back

The backpack features the Air Contour X™ back system, which feels quite sturdy yet adapts very well to the contours of the body and distributes the weight of the backpack excellently. A very important feature is the ability to adjust the back length. It is adjustable from 43 to 48 cm, which is ideal especially for women. The frame is then covered with a lightweight mesh that is cleverly offset from the frame to ensure the best possible ventilation. The placement of the hydration bladder pocket is brilliantly designed. It is accessible from the outside of the backpack, so you can see how much water is left and easily refill it at any time without having to take half your gear out of the backpack.

Comfort First

The shoulder straps are designed primarily with maximum comfort in mind. They are covered with double mesh and padded with perforated foam for maximum breathability and sweat wicking. Of course, it also features a height-adjustable chest strap with a whistle. Another major plus is the balance straps, which allow you to pull the load closer to your center of gravity.

Perfect hip belt

The hip belt is exactly what a high-quality hip belt should be—quality padding, lightweight mesh, and spacious pockets. The hip belt fits perfectly, hugs the hips nicely, doesn’t pinch or cut into the skin anywhere, and distributes the backpack’s weight exceptionally well. We give it 9 out of 10 points here. The pockets are spacious enough to fit even a smaller smartphone. You won’t be able to cram a larger “paddle” in there, but these pockets can hold most small items.

Lots of pockets

Spacious, mesh pockets are located on the sides of the backpack; they’re angled so you can reach for a bottle even while walking. We really appreciate the spacious, mesh pocket on the front of the backpack. It has a zipper closure and easily fits items you want to keep handy throughout the day. It also works very well for drying wet clothes. The backpack’s lid is fixed in place. There is another spacious pocket on top, and on the inside, there is a pocket with a carabiner, which is ideal for storing valuables. On the body of the backpack, you’ll also find a so-called multilock system for attaching trekking poles, an ice axe, or even a bicycle helmet.

Conclusion

All in all, the Rab Aeon ND 33 is a highly versatile, compact backpack suitable for most outdoor activities. It has a very reasonable weight, durable material, and is exceptionally well-equipped overall. A men’s version is also available: Rab Aeon 35, which has a longer back panel.
