The waterproof, packable Halo Pants will prove indispensable wherever light weight and speed of movement are top priorities. They’ll come in handy on long mountain hikes where the weather is typically unpredictable. You won’t even notice they’re there until you need to pull them out of your backpack.

Weighing 80 grams and about the size of a tennis ball when packed, these pants are among the best on the market. They are ideal for long ultra-races where both a jacket and pants are required gear. Paired with the Halo Jacket, you get a waterproof set weighing about 180 grams! They are made from ultra-lightweight yet durable 2-layer Point Zero H2O fabric with fully taped seams. With a water column rating of 10,000 mm, it provides sufficient protection against rain.

Although the manufacturer lists the material’s vapor permeability as “only” 10,000 MVTR, it seemed far more breathable to us during testing. That’s why we had it measured by an expert from a technical university, who recorded RET values around 4—which corresponds to a vapor permeability of over 25,000 MVTR! As is customary with OMM, the manufacturer has paid close attention to technical construction and fit. The pants feature elastic side panels at the waist that always adapt to your waistline.

The integrated inner pocket is also handy, allowing you to easily pack the pants away. The knees are pre-shaped for maximum freedom of movement. The legs can be tightened with Velcro, and thanks to the sewn-in gusset, they can be widened and even pulled over running shoes if needed.

Personal Experience

From the Halo line, I had the chance to try the Halo Smock jacket, which is made from the same material and absolutely blew me away! I should note that I mainly used it as a backup piece for long mountain runs. For a longer, multi-day trek, I would likely opt for a jacket with a heavier fabric weight for greater durability. Even so, the jacket really surprised me. I used it several times during runs lasting several hours in the rain and found that the water column rating and the DWR finish work great. Even after several hours in the rain, the jacket was still beading water, but nothing got inside. After the run, I was surprised that the jacket had actually breathed quite well. I don’t usually wear a waterproof jacket while running, because at a brisk pace, you start to drown in your own sweat. However, the Halo Smock let a large portion of the sweat escape, so I still felt comfortable. I eventually took the jacket on a multi-day hike with my child, whom I carried on my back, and even with the heavier backpack, the jacket proved its worth. I should note, however, that I only had it on my back for about an hour a day in light rain. For longer treks, I would definitely choose a jacket with a heavier fabric. The Halo Smock has recently become my top choice. It’s the perfect choice for shorter trips with uncertain weather. Václav M.
