It has been nearly 40 years since Rab Carrington began hand-sewing the first sleeping bag that would bear his name. His first designs were based on his mountaineering experience. The goal was to create high-quality, lightweight, and warm sleeping bags that would perform well in the mountains. That’s exactly what Rab does—lightweight and reliable. He thinks through the details and comes up with new materials. Like when, in the 1990s, he first used Pertex fabric, which is still used today to make the most durable down products or waterproof clothing that packs down into a small bundle. Their sleeping bags are hand-filled at a factory in Derbyshire, UK. This ensures absolute control over the fact that the sleeping bags have never been improperly stored or compressed.

Rab Alpine 400

The Rab Alpine series of sleeping bags is designed for mountain adventures such as mountaineering or high-altitude trekking. However, thanks to its balanced ratio of weight, warmth, packability, and comfort, it serves perfectly as a lightweight three-season sleeping bag for most outdoor activities. The Rab Alpine 400 is filled with 400 grams of duck down with a fill power of 650+FP. The down has a water-repellent treatment from Nikwax. This allows it to better withstand moisture, dry faster, and regain its full loft. All down used by Rab naturally meets the R.D.S. The outer material is the proven Pertex Quantum, which excels in breathability and is windproof. The inner lining is made of 20D recycled nylon (38g/m²).  Rab paid particular attention to technical details. The sleeping bag is arrow-shaped to reduce unnecessary bulk and weight. At the same time, it prevents down migration and keeps it evenly distributed throughout the body. The trapezoidal "boxwall" construction with a differential cut eliminates cold spots and maximizes down loft.  Rab has successfully designed a technically well-thought-out hood and inner shoulder collar, which connects to an insulated partition along the zipper to prevent heat loss. Everything can, of course, be comfortably adjusted. There is also an inner zippered pocket for storing a headlamp, phone, etc.

The so-called “foot box,” shaped like a fin, is also excellent, giving you plenty of room for your feet.  The 3/4-length two-way YKK zipper with an insulated barrier features a YKK anti-snag insert. Rab specifies comfort temperature (the ideal temperature you should use as a guide when choosing a sleeping bag), limit temperature  (the temperature at which a standard man can remain at rest for 8 hours without waking up), extreme limit (this should be taken as a guide to how the sleeping bag would perform in an emergency situation, not as a recommended use case. It refers to the temperature at which an average woman can remain for 6 hours without risk of death from hypothermia). In addition, Rab specifies the so-called “Rab limit”, which is based on their own experience and that of athletes and is considered a reasonable limit for the usability of the sleeping bag.
