The well-designed Rab Firewall technical waterproof pants offer an excellent balance of weight and durability. They aren’t pure ultralight pieces like, for example, our Etalon pants or the ultimate Phantom pants, but at the same time, despite their low weight (312 grams in size M), they meet the standards of mountaineering pants.  The main material is 30D Pertex® Shield 3-Layer 120 g/m² with 20/20 water column/breathability ratings. We really appreciate its stretch, which generally significantly increases the comfort of wearing hardshell clothing.

The side YKK® AquaGuard® zippers are the tried-and-true 3/4 length and are covered by a flap along their entire length on the inside. Another valued feature is the three sliders on each of these zippers. This allows for a wide range of ventilation adjustments.  The pants have a drawcord hem and are finished with metal studs for fastening. There are also loops for securing the drawcord under the boot.

The partially elastic waistband is rubberized to prevent bunching and features a drawcord for ideal waist adjustment. We would recommend these pants to all hikers, trekkers, and mountain enthusiasts as year-round waterproof pants. In a pinch, they could also be used for ski mountaineering, but they lack reinforced lower legs, so I would feel more comfortable taking them on lighter ski touring trips instead.
