Product detailed description
For the 2021 season, Rab has released an improved version of its highly breathable, waterproof softshells, the Rab Kinetic Plus and Rab Kinetic Alpine. Based on several years of field use and feedback from many users, minor enhancements have been implemented, resulting in the Kinetic 2.0 and Kinetic Alpine 2.0. The overall design of the Kinetic Alpine 2.0 remains the same as its predecessor, but the materials used differ.
Rab Kinetic Alpine 2.0
The foundation of the entire jacket is still the three-layer Proflex™ laminate, which consists of two knitted layers and a polyurethane membrane between them. Unlike woven fabric, the knit is much softer and more elastic, which is why the Kinetic Alpine 2.0 feels much softer and more stretchy than standard waterproof jackets at first touch. The outer knit is woven as densely as possible to ensure good mechanical durability. The inner layer, in turn, has the structure and material of a functional T-shirt—ensuring rapid moisture wicking. It is essentially a functional T-shirt, a lightweight windbreaker, and a waterproof jacket all in one. The first change from the previous Kinetic Alpine model is that the Proflex™ membrane knits in the Kinetic Alpine 2.0 are made from recycled polyester. With this, Rab fulfills its core philosophy, which aims to prioritize environmental protection and meet the growing demands of sustainable development. The second, and at first glance more visible, change is the addition of more durable material in areas subject to greater wear. The hood, shoulders, sides, and sleeves are reinforced with heavier-gauge woven nylon, which ensures greater abrasion resistance. In terms of individual features, the Kinetic Alpine 2.0 retains two large side pockets positioned high enough to be accessible even with the waist belt fastened, an internal zippered pocket, and a water-resistant YKK zipper running the entire length of the jacket—now a two-way zipper—Velcro cuff adjustments, and a hood large enough to fit a helmet underneath. The hood features front drawcords as well as drawcords at the crown. Drawcords are also located around the waist.
Usage
Thanks to its softness, flexibility, 10,000 mm water column, and breathability of 35,000 g/m² per 24 hours, the Kinetic Alpine 2.0 is the ideal jacket for both low- and high-intensity activities throughout the year. It comes into its own in the changeable conditions of spring and fall, when temperatures fluctuate and showers alternate with clear skies. Its high breathability ensures you won’t need to take it off as temperatures rise. In winter, it serves as excellent outer protection against wind and wet snow. In summer, it serves as a reliable outer layer during brief showers.
However, reinforced panels and a slightly higher weight make the Kinetic Alpine 2.0 ideal for activities that place higher demands on the material and require greater durability. The Kinetic Alpine 2.0 truly shines during winter and summer climbing, on via ferratas, or ski mountaineering, where you’ll definitely also make use of the Kinetic Alpine 2.0 pants. The Kinetic Alpine 2.0 is, of course, also suitable for activities such as hiking, running, or cross-country skiing, but it’s worth considering whether a lighter model like the Kinetic 2.0, or perhaps the ultimate Rab Kinetic Ultra.
If you're unsure about which waterproof jacket to choose, we've put together a Nalehko guide.
