Gossamer Gear The One is yet another in a line of absolutely perfect products from this legendary American brand. For over 10 years, we’ve been offering great Gossamer Gear backpacks with which we’ve completed most of  our long-distance treks. And now we’re introducing the second generation of shelters and tents from this company. Since its introduction a few years ago, The One has dominated the vast majority of rankings for the most popular ultralight 1-person tents.

After getting to try out the new version with improved fabric and a ventilation opening, we believe that the Gossamer Gear The One V2 will easily maintain its flagship status.

ClearSkies™ Material

The new ClearSkies™ fabric represents a significant improvement over the previous generation of The One tent. It combines lightweight 15D recycled Robic Nylon with a 20D ripstop mesh, making it more tear-resistant and better suited for long-term use in demanding conditions. A silicone layer on the outside and a durable PU coating on the inside enhance water protection while helping to reduce the fabric’s water absorption. According to the manufacturer, the new fabric offers 35% higher tensile strength and more than double the water resistance compared to the previously used material. Naturally, the fabric is made from recycled fibers and produced without any intentionally added PFAS substances.

Proven Construction

This is a single-wall hybrid construction in which the inner tent is separated from the vestibule. Essentially, it is a simple pyramid that is pitched using two trekking poles but comes with a sewn-in inner tent, including a groundsheet. To ensure the longest possible lifespan of the groundsheet, we strongly recommend using Tyvek or Polycro under the tent. On one side, The One features an entrance with a full-size vestibule where both flaps can be opened. Ideally, you should leave one half of the vestibule rolled up, which ensures much better ventilation of the tent and thus reduces internal condensation. The ventilation system has been completely redesigned, and thanks to a Velcro-fastened support pole, it now ensures a continuous flow of air even when the tent is closed. The floor is essentially one large, deep tub, so water won’t easily seep inside the tent. Above this tub is the mesh inner tent. On the opposite side, the standard vestibule has been replaced by a simple, shortened canopy that provides excellent protection for the interior from rain while also promoting better ventilation. It’s also worth mentioning that there are two mesh vents in the floor near the feet and head—a great detail, since these are the areas where you exhale.

Ready for action

A huge advantage is that all the seams are factory-taped. So you don’t have to worry about a thing. The package also includes 6 high-quality aluminum stakes and additional guy lines, which we recommend using on the loops in the tent’s main body. Thanks to these two extra tension points, you can easily increase the interior headroom and legroom. The corners of the tent, which bear the greatest stress, are sufficiently and carefully reinforced, and there are also reflective guy lines with line-locks that make setting up the tent a breeze.

Plenty of Space

With an interior length of 213 cm, the tent is suitable for people up to approximately 190 cm tall. The width of the tent is more than sufficient for standard sleeping pads. Shorter people will have no trouble fitting inside the tent even with a backpack, but we recommend leaving your backpack and shoes in the covered vestibule. The height at the top of the tent is approximately 125 cm, so you can easily sit down, change clothes, and more inside. You’ll also appreciate the small details, such as a clothesline at the top of the tent, a hook for hanging a light, and side mesh pockets for storing other small items.

Simple and Quick Setup

Since the tent is one large piece, setup is really quick. Simply stake down both sides of the tent loosely, then insert a trekking pole (extended to about 125 cm) into the top, stretch out the vestibules, and stake them down. Do the same on the opposite side. Then simply walk around the entire tent and gently tighten all the corners so that the tent is nicely taut. Here we really appreciate another innovation—the new generation of The One tent uses a clever connection between the flysheet and groundsheet tensioning points. Thanks to the integrated tensioning system, a single stake is sufficient for both points, which simplifies tent setup, reduces the number of anchor points needed, and helps keep the entire shelter perfectly taut. The result is faster setup, a neater configuration, and better stability in the field. We also recommend using the two additional stakes to provide extra tension for the tent’s side walls. With the right choice of location and careful staking, The One is truly stable even in windier conditions. If you don’t want to use trekking poles for setup, we also offer original aluminum poles.

The entire package is very lightweight, easy to set up, and takes up almost no space in a backpack. It’s one of the most popular tents for long-distance treks.
